Title: Guantamera
Why this song?:
Genre: Folk
Musician(s): The Sandpipers
Date Released: October 1966
Interviewee: Agatha Guzman (my grandmother)
Why this song?:
My grandmother chose this song in particular because she claims
"This song was very easy to dance to, catchy and the lyrics helped embrace
my american and puerto-rican sides, since the song is in english and spanish."
Event: In the year 1966, more than millions of things occurred. With that in mind, an event that was chosen which was one in a million was
called an article "3 Groups Claim Victory, Drop P.S. 175 Boycott; Harlem Parents Says School Will Teach African and U.S. Negro History". This article is about how schools were being taught history in school, but not African American History. Therefore, many people boycotted and fought against the Board Of Education in order to ensure that students were going to be able to learn about the history of African Americans in Public School 175.
Title: Rock and Roll Music Genre: Rock Musician(s): The Beach Boys Date Released: May 1976 Interviewee: Ray Hunt(Father)
Why this song?: Ray claims " When 1976 comes to mind I think of this song. This song was one of the first
rock song I actually liked from this genre of music, which was out of the ordinary for me.
I was always used to listening to rap and hip-hop, so this song opened a new world to me
as far as giving new songs from different genres a chance."
Event: An article that was very interesting from the year 1976 is called "The Schomburg Library is Accused of Race Bias". This article speaks about a former librarian that worked for the Harlem Schomburg Collection, which was known to be one of the largest places of where works stored. The New York Library system was then charged with racial discrimination, which followed the dismissal of the librarian.
Title: Rock Box
Genre: Hip-Hop/R & B
Musician(s): Run-D.M.C
Date Released: January 1st, 1984
Interviewee: Richard Greene (Brother)
Why this song?: Richard stated "My favorite artist at the time was Run-D.M.C. I pretty much love every of his songs, but this is ultimately one
of my favorites from the 80's".
Event: An article that was very fascinating was called "Blacks and Political Power-The Key To Easing Tension". The article spoke about how if African Americans didn't get a grip in the political domain there would be more tension and there would be mutual respect between African Americans and the Caucasians. Although, it is said that politics will not change the race relations. With having African Americans involved in political actions there will be an equitable division of power between races.
.
There is a strong relevance between the three articles and African American history. The articles were chosen besides the fact that they were interesting and had to do with the time era in which were studied. These articles all talk about racism, therefore throughout the 1900's that is a sign of a common theme. In the 1960's people were fighting so that African American history could be taught in schools; while in the 1970's people began to loose there jobs for discriminations, and in the 1980's African Americans were beginning to be involved with politics. With that in mind there is evidence that in a short time frame of 30 years there has been a drastic changes in the African American community.
Throughout this assignment there is not all music by African American artists, but it is still relevant to African American history. In the 1900's there was still racism although it was not as severe as today. Different genres of music helped derive new types of music, which is why there is a select variety of genres that have been used.
